New weapon to battle beer bellies

Men battling with their beer bellies can now beat the bulge thanks to a new specially designed corset.

While women already have a range of body-slimming garments to help flatter their figures, British department store Marks & Spencer has decided to produce "shapewear" for men.

Its first range comprises fine-stretch cotton t-shirts and vests designed to flatten and shape a man's torso thanks to hidden support panels.

The retailer claims the garments can shave up to 3.8cm off a man's silhouette, based on the results of trials.

Head of buying for men's underwear Dave Bins said he expected the range, which hits the shelves on January 7, would become as popular as socks and ties.

"Men are becoming more conscious of their appearance," he said.

"Our Bodymax range has been designed in response to this, giving men a quick fix solution for those lumps and bumps in the same way that 'shapewear' does for women."
